After her visit, weeks went by without me working on my assessments, until that day when I told myself this is the day that you will start with your 20 Keys E-learning programme. To my surprise, once I started with my assessments, I wanted to do more and more  (I wanted to see what is going to happen next). After all my online quiz assessments were done, I needed to start with my practical workplace activity.  I felt a bit lost, and I contacted Huibie and Johan for assistance; without any hesitation, they were there to assist me.

When you think 20 Keys, often what comes to mind is another checksheet  (I admit, I did). While doing my practical workplace activity, I realised that this is not the case. I am very pleased now that I enrolled for the 20 Keys E-learning programme. Doing my Key 1 practical workplace activity was a great challenge. Not only did I learn a lot, but it also promoted teamwork at our lab, as all of us, in some way or another, had a role to play in creating a Model Workplace; this included colour coded labels (each department in Agriculture was given their own colour), hanging of labels, creating work table SOPs, and so much more, to improve the workflow.

I realised that once you get started, you don’t want to stop improving. This programme showed me how the 20 Keys checksheets actually help you in your area of work. Once you understand what the checksheet is all about, the journey to become word class really makes sense.

I am so excited that I was found competent on my 20 Keys E-learning submission. Thank you to my manager and team who assisted me in any way they could, and to the ODI team – I couldn’t have done it without all your SUPPORT!!!!

NQF Level 5 in Productivity can be done as a stand-alone Continuous Improvement System, or through a Qualification.

Implementing continuous improvement (kaizen) to increase productivity in an organisation is more than merely drawing up action plans, and implementing them. To be successful and sustainable, it requires a transformation of the organisation’s culture. Just as with changing habits, it takes exceptional measures to make this transformation complete and successful.

We are offering an online service for 20 Keys training and implementation support. The service, based on the 20 Keys system, is tailored to your specific needs, according to the stage of your operations excellence journey. Support varies from individual and group-training sessions, to Key Leader action plan progress reviews, and next steps discussions, using specific tools and techniques, implementation of small group projects, and any other relevant support. The service is available on an hourly basis; scheduled according to your availability, time constraints, and convenience.

This service is in addition to the 20 Keys e-Learning courses (for each of the 20 Keys) that are also offered online, and for which we already have a substantial number of registered learners.  The courses consist of studying a particular Key (the manual is available online), then doing a Quiz on it, which must be passed (a few tries are allowed), after which the learner needs to complete a practical, in the workplace, project. All instructions are available online. Evidence on the project is then submitted online, with relevant documentation, statistics, photos, etc. It is marked, with comments and advice on strengthening it (a few tries/refinements are allowed). When the project is accepted, a Completion of Course Certificate is issued. For organisations, the benefit is not just more understanding of the Keys, but tangible

• Delivery,
• Safety and
• Morale improvements from the projects.

ODI provides support, and where more than one person enrol per Key, we also have WhatsApp groups (per Key), where questions and advice are discussed.

In Astral’s Meadows Feed Mill in Port Elizabeth there are  lots of expensive production equipment – typical of capital intensive equipment plants.  When Kate van der Walt (Nutritionist),  joined ODI’s e-learning course for Key 9 of the 20 Keys Management Improvement system, she realised that the NIR machine in the laboratory, is as critical as the production machines, in terms of ensuring on-time delivery to customers. Kate decided to select this topic as her project as part of the e-Learning course. Well done to Kate who is the first Astral Foods learner to complete an e-Learning course!

In her own words:

“The 20 Keys system for improvement is like 20 Key Safety Boxes, that need to be opened. Once you start opening these boxes, you will be amazed at what you discover.

I was given Key 9 to work with.  Once I unlocked my box, I discovered a whole new world. As a nutritionist, I have no clue about maintenance in the factory nor on “How to maintain machines and equipment”. Boy-oh-boy, was I in for a new experience in my life…

Thanks to the excellent 20 Keys admin. staff for support (e-mail, phone calls and WhatsApp group) and ODI’s Director – Johan Benadie, I was on my way to complete my assignments in less than the 2 month deadline.

I took a small machine (800mm x 300mm x 900mm) compared to the rest of the machines in the factory, but that specific NIR FOSS 500 model machine, is our Key machine that is responsible for making our factory run. Without the machine the entire quality side of our production line will stand still and we won’t be able to produce feed for the animals.

During this process I realised that Key 9 needs all the other remaining 19 Keys’ input to make a success of it! I didn’t realise at the beginning of the course, that all the Keys are interlocking with each other.

In our personal lives, Key 9 – the model machine, can be your cell phone. Without it, your life would be more difficult to work in (e-mails, internet, calls, maps, shopping, internet banking… you get my picture?).

So what is your  excuse? Why have you not started completing your Keys? It’s very easy to come up with excuses as to why you have not started or completed your assignments. But at the end of every day, you make time and plan for the following –

• tea breaks
• lunch breaks
• smoke breaks
• small talk with your colleagues
• appointments
• …….. you get my list and you can fill in the rest of the gaps.

So why all the excuses for not doing your Key assignments???

If you are confused, ask the 20 Keys Admin Support group on WhatsApp or phone Johan Benadie and he will assist you.

But it all comes down to integrity – if you want to do it you will, but if you use the first excuse that comes up in your head as to why you have not started nor completed the assignments in the 2 month deadline, then you will never accomplish it.

Stop making excuses – JUST DO IT! and unlock your Key’s potential!”

The topic of discussion was “How smart leaders are adapting to the next normal”. The guest was Grant Schreiber – a South African author, editor, publisher  and founding editor of Real Leaders, a leadership magazine that focuses exclusively on sustainability and ethical business.

The following is a summary of the discussions and opinions.

What are smart leaders doing now? Showing lots of Empathy! They have the ability to understand the emotional make-up of other people and have the skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions. People are going through lots of emotional trauma and grief, and leaders – now more than ever before, need to have that “generosity of spirit”.  They need to have an “extended family mentality”.

Leaders are becoming more human. People will ask,” Where were you during the lock-down”? “Did you help?” Leaders need to be real advocates for helping people and society.

Business and society are now firmly linked. Philanthropy and charity should be embedded in the purpose and values of organisations. Companies need to re-look their values and values need to reflect more of serving mankind and not only shareholders, staff and customers.

Leaders are realising that they cannot work on their own to resolve issues. They are gathering a team of problem-solvers around them, because they realise people need help. They are not swamped by these emotions but they come up with clear solutions.

Leaders are encouraging staff to WFH, the new acronym for “WORKING FROM HOME”, where possible.

The world has moved towards digitalisation. One can see this by the increase in online traffic and this will continue. Communication via Zoom, Skype, WeBex, Gotomeeting and Whatsapp is booming – becoming the new norm for socialising.

Leaders are looking at supply chains and asking how it can be changed to accommodate this new world of work? The challenge is – how do you influence people by sitting at home? A large part of leadership is influence.

There is now a proliferation of studying and learning from home opportunities, more so than ever before. Learning and studying from home will become the new norm.

In every crisis there is opportunity. There are many examples of this. During the war, Coca Cola wanted to distribute their products to the frontline. To do this they opened up distribution hubs. After the war this served as distribution centres and gave them an advantage over others.

We must not embed the words “social distancing”. The correct word is physical distancing + social connecting. #Togetherapart

This is now our Kairos moment – a propitious moment for decision and action as we enter the new normalcy. Some brave decisions are required from leaders. Old habits and old behaviour need to change and bold new decisions are required.

As part of their operational excellence drive, DBSSSA and GWK enrolled a group of learners to complete their NQF Level 5 certificate in Productivity, as a blended e-Learning option. (Full Accreditation SSETA No. 0228, Learning Programme Approval SABPP)

After a year-long journey, the DBSSSA and GWK group of learners finished their final presentations today.

The effectiveness of the Operational Excellence Management System, was evident. Every learner had to present on three productivity improvements made, as well as many other aspects of operational excellence.
